Mean arterial pressure (MAP) calculator

MAP estimates the average pressure in your arteries during one heartbeat. Enter your two blood pressure numbers to get MAP and pulse pressure.

Nothing you type leaves your device. No sign-up, no limits.

Formula: MAP = diastolic + (systolic − diastolic) ÷ 3

How to use the map calculator

  1. Enter your blood pressure. Systolic and diastolic in mmHg from a cuff.
  2. Read MAP. Normal is roughly 70 to 100 mmHg. Clinicians use MAP to judge whether organs are adequately perfused.
  3. Read pulse pressure. Typical is about 40 mmHg. It widens with age and arterial stiffness.

What MAP tells you

Because the heart spends about two thirds of each cycle in diastole, MAP sits closer to the diastolic value than a simple average would. It is a quick proxy for the pressure driving blood into organs. In hospitals, a MAP of at least 65 mmHg is a common target in critically ill patients; for everyday readings, 70 to 100 is the usual normal range.

Limits of the formula

The one-third rule assumes a resting heart rate. At high heart rates the proportion of time in diastole shrinks and the formula underestimates true MAP. It is fine for resting cuff readings, which is what this calculator is for.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal MAP?

About 70 to 100 mmHg at rest. Values are computed from a cuff reading; they are not a separate measurement.

What does a high pulse pressure mean?

Above about 60 mmHg in older adults is associated with stiffer arteries and higher cardiovascular risk. In young fit people a wider pulse pressure after exercise is normal.

Is MAP more important than systolic?

They answer different questions. Systolic drives most hypertension decisions; MAP is used to judge perfusion, mainly in acute care.
